Post Contoocook River tomorrow??

Was thinking about heading down to the contoocook river tomorrow morning to give it a shot, I have never personally fished this river but i have heard a lot about it and I am eager to try it.

I have no idea what the water temps are like or how the river is fishing, exactly why I am asking for advice.

If you have any suggestions (spots, flies, time of day, etc.) please let me know ASAP.

Thank you,

Mac

I haven't been fishing it much lately but I've grown up fishing it. It usually fishes pretty good through July and the rain has probably helped that even more. I would stick to the bigger pools. There's quite a few big pools upstream of the fly fishing only section in West Henniker. The best way to access them is from Old Rail Road Dr. just over the line in Hillsboro. Keep driving down the class VI road until you start to see fast water and you'll find plenty of large pools. Buggers should fool a few rainbows during the day. I'd try the usual suspects as far as nymphs go like PT's and hares ears. If you're still around at sunset definitely try some caddis dries and stimulators! I caught many fish in the Tooky at dark last summer on stimulators even when there was no surface activity. Good luck and let me know how you do!
