Is anyone catching any stripers off the rocks in Rye?
I have been out several times and gotten skunked. I have not seen any bait around either.
Is it me? or is it really slow?

Hey, Tippet. I've been wanting to do just that - hit the rocks in Rye - but haven't made the time. I was probably going to try a black sluggo (gasp!) at dusk to see if there are any fish around. Next time you plan on trying again, shoot me a PM and we can meet up. There's got to be some fish around!!

I fished in the vicinity last night and it didn't produce. Really slow :(
I'm trying to find some travel/vacation catalogs... did any of you come across one?

Went to Hampton Harbor yesterday with some guys and did what I usually do. I start with my fly rod, then when my friends start catching fish on bait, I switch over after a couple of hours. Yesterday I caught a big shad? on my third cast, then caught many schoolie stripers. I lost a lot more than I caught.
My friends didn't catch anything on bait, which was a nice change. The other people around were catching small flounder and a few stripers.
I'm still adjusting to using a 9wt rod. It's a bit different than the 6wt. I use a sinking-tip line, whice I like a lot. I also have a full-floating line, that I haven't used yet. I wish I bought a sinking line instead of the full-float. Maybee I will for next year? Any suggestions?

Seems like the Striper fishing has slowed down a ton and I was wondering what October typically holds for us new to the area...

I've been going to the wildlife refuge on Plum island the past couple of weeks. Things have been extremely slow there. Last year I was literally knee-deep in stripers and blues feeding on baby bunkers. The action lasted right through October. This year driving up and down PI has been frustrating. When I do see surface action, it's been off shore too far. I've been making a point of bringing a grill and some beer to keep myself entertained.
As a matter of fact, I have not been doing well on the rivers and streams lately. Maybe, I'm in a serious slump? I miss catching fish, but I still love fishing even if I don't catch anything.
Two more weeks of trout fishing...except those few spots that don't close.
??two more weeks?? :(

I just spent four days in Martha's Vinyard (shore-bound) and experienced the same difficulties. Went completely around the island several times looking for activity and talking to anglers. There were actually a lot of people fishing because of the big derby.
No one was into anything. Nothing but dismal reports. I saw some of the daily weigh-in sheets for days I was there and the fish were surprisingly small. The tackle shop guys told us that no one has been doing much of anything. Just a few small fish here and there....even from the boats. Don't know if it was the weather, lack of baitfish, or whatever mystical influences were in effect.

I was in Martha's Vinyard in the spring and did fairly well. It was my first time there, so I did more exploring/driving than fishing. I would like to go back one more time this year and make use of the overpriced beach driving pass I should NOT have purchased...
I bait fished Portsmouth this past weekend on Saturday and Sunday morning. I was skunked as well...unless catching a seagull counts....

OCT can be tough the fish are either there in numbers or not at all. Been great Fishing in Boston with loads of Bait around. I am sure the migration is still going strong and fish should be comming your way soon. Might take a cold snap like the one later this week to get it going. If you don't see a significant amount of bait where you are fishing they won't stick around to long. I have read some reports of some Huge fish being caught including a 48" on the fly. allot of fish have been seen chasing hooked schoolies to the Boat. I am going to try to Tie something that looks like a Schoolie to throw my next time out. Thinking 12-15" Yak Hair , Big Eyes. I can always cut it up and tie something else with it if it does'nt work. Will post a Pic if it works.
SteveH, you had the same experience on MV that I did. I caught Bass and Blues but not what I was really looking for. Late Sept/OCT is usually a great time down there. I have some great shore spots that the Baitshops will not devulge. Let me know next time.
A FFNH MV Derby Trip would be fun, There is a Campground on the Island that is centrally located. Still be allot of $$ though. Place is just generally exspensive.

I am planning on getting out and trying the Rt.1A stretch this weekend. Looks like a nice low tide start @ Hampton Harbor, then go north and fish off the rocks. I found a couple nice areas near Rye that I just love to fish. Hopefully I can get into a few more fish while I can. I will wear my signature Fox hoodie, if you see me say hello!
P.S. MV Derby would be awesome! Camping, fishing, camping and more fishing! Not so expensive if I start saving my pennies now!
