got this email forwarded to me from the White River TU Chapter, anyone familar with the RMPP program?
Greetings:
A meeting is being held on March 31, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Lebanon City
Hall to discuss the possible nomination of the Mascoma River to the
New Hampshire Rivers Management and Protection Program (RMPP). All
members of the public are encouraged to attend this event. Please feel free to post the attached flyer.
Please come and hear about the RMPP and its benefits from Steve
Couture, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services River
Coordinator. This program is being brought to you in effort to educate the public about the program and to gather input as to whether this program should be pursued for the Mascoma River.
River designation provides a mechanism for local input into state protection efforts related to water quality and instream flows. In 1988 the state legislator created the RMPP to allow the designation of
significant river resources for local and state management planning. There have been 14 rivers designated since the adoption of the program. Some of the more notable rivers that have received designation include the Connecticut River, Cold River and Saco River
to name a few. River designation is an extensive process that
involves the development of a permanent local advisory committee, data gathering, river classification and completing an application to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Eventually, the State Legislator would need to approve the nomination. Local support is critical throughout the nomination process and in the future to ensure successful results.
This meeting is sponsored by the Mascoma Watershed Conservation Council and the Upper Valley lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission. More information about the RMPP may be found at: http://www.des.nh.gov/rivers/index.html.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
