Just wondering if anyone is planning on doing any fishing on the coast this weekend, wading, maybe the Hampton area, Joppa? Thanks to Jim C. I am totally addicted to striper fishing. Despite the terrible conditions on Jun 3rd”s salt get together, I had one of the best times fishing in a long time, thanks Jim! It’s all I have been thinking about, I can’t even concentrate at work this week! I have lost the desire to do anything else. I just don’t feel that I know the area and tides ect well enough to go at it solo just yet.

Solid... I'd say just drive along the coast and fish anything with Salt water right now...seriously. If the fish aren't hitting...move to another. Worse thing that can happen is you get skunked and have a nice day on the coast. Plenty of young ladies sun bathing on the wall in Hampton B... if things get real slow... Look where others are fishing... sometimes, for whatever reason the fish just respond better to flies...it happens often, so don't get discouraged if they're not getting into any. Look for areas where currents meet and for drastic color changes in the water. I'm sure your more than ready to do it solo and don't drive yourself crazy worrying about tides. Most places have a better tide to fish but ask two people and they'll usually have 2 different opinions on this. A couple weeks ago I was with this guy  who said a certain place never fished good on this certain tide....dozens of fish later (a nice one too), our minds had quickly changed. This was one of those spots that gets hammered too. If your not familiar with wading the salt than just stay out of the water or just go up to your knees. That's all I usually do anyway...course half the time my waders are leaking. Just don't get caught with your cork hangin' out like this guy...

I decide to head out on my first solo striper trip this past Sunday. Thanks for the advice BugChucka! I started out fishing the south side of Hampton harbor, across from Hampton State Park. I got there at dead low tide and fished about 1 - 2 hrs. of the incoming tide. I manage to land 2 small fish and one that felt pretty good, but got away. Then I bumped into a couple other fly fishermen who were headed up north just past Odiorne point. They were nice enough to let me tag along and show me some nice spots to fish from. Managed a couple of small fish there as well, it was nice to get out of the brutal winds! Seems I get stuck in the most awful conditions! Last thing we did was fish off some of the big boulders of Rt. 1a. I picked up about 4 fish there! All were around the same size, but it was a blast!
...last thing...Be sure to wear sun screen, I got a terrible burn and becasue of the wind and cold temps, I didn't even realize it. Now I look like a fool! Beware!
That is the emoticon that represents me the best.

hi,

Sorry to ask such a basic question about striper fishing. I do a lot of fresh water fly fishing and with the conditions the way they are I have not been really able to get out and do any. I have however been spin striper fishing to take the edge off. Well here is the question, can I striper fish with a fresh water fly set up, I have a 5/6 9ft rod and a STH reel (MR-POP 1.5). I do not want to blow out my system.

Thank you,

That is exactly what I use for schoolies; my fresh water 5/6 9 ft fly rod.
