Default Striper report

Not much has been on here, probably because there has not been very good fishing this Summer. So here is my report for what its worth.

Fished the Merrimack yesterday. On the water at day-break. There was a pretty good sized pod of fish breaking about half way out to the mouth on the edge of the channel off Joppa Flats. Not really big fish. Threw an assortment of flies at them but not even a hit. Suspect they were on sand eels. Few boats showed up with spin gear and saw not a fish caught. As the sun came up and the boat traffic increased they went down and out.

Fished around the bar and mouth as the tide went out - zero.

Put the flies rods away and went outside and along Plum Island and trolled for Blues. While we were there saw about 10 boats trolling around for Blues. Never saw a fish caught. After several hours of that packed it up and headed in. So my report is - waiting for cooler weather and maybe the fall run.

Thanks for the report. I've been considering breaking out my CC for an early morning trip to Joppa and the mouth, but I've been skeptical based on the absence of positive reports on other websites. Your report basically confirms that I'm best to keep it on the trailer for now anyway.

It is a plain fact, however, that downstream fishing with a non-imitative fly (lure, in the British sense) does not mix comfortably with upstream imitative fishing...I'll stay out of the argument about whether this technique is really fly fishing. In terms of interest, it is for me ahead of most downstream fishing and spinning. And I've already opined that spinning is better than staying at home with the television set.
